Once Upon a Time…

“Certainly, children need books to widen their horizons, deepen their understandings, and give them broader social insights. They also need books that minister to their merriment or deepen their appreciation of beauty. They need heroism, fantasy, and down-to-earth realism. And they need books that, in the course of a good story, help to develop clear standards of right and wrong. Finally, children’s books should have those qualities of good writing that distinguish literature for any age or group of people.”

I have a couple exciting art things in store for you which I will be sharing soon, but in the near future I will be taking a break from taking on major projects while I focus on caring for our baby. I am looking forward to colouring days, storytime, and seeing all the creativity this next stage in life will bring! 🎨🖌️

After having my favourite @juliusroberts stew for lunch, I was off on an excursion to discover Back to Bamburgh being sold at @buchhandlunglabyrinth in the old town centre of Basel! Absolutely exciting not only seeing my work printed on a book, but also on the shelves in a bookshop!
Came home in time for tea and had a @bakedbymilo cookie I got before heading back, as well as this rose from a beggar woman which I thought all too appropriate, and saved myself from being turned into a beast. 🥀

It was so amazing to see a book I illustrated the cover for on the shelves right next to Dickens. 📚

It was a wonderful time sharing the fruit of the labour of the many years Geoffrey spent writing this book as well as seeing my cover illustration which really came to life during the select readings by the author himself. 📜🖋️

Great seeing some very familiar faces from the past 20 years as well! A most meaningful moment was mutually made.

Happy Publication Day!! 🎉 BACK TO BAMBURGH by Geo Happy Publication Day!! 🎉

BACK TO BAMBURGH by Geoffrey Le Lancier is now available from @olympiapublishers! I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to create the cover for this book! 📖🐴

It is the fourteenth century and Kingdom aspirations abound. Spiritual and political forces have combined into a maelstrom of lofty convictions and apocalyptic fervour. Bamburgh peasant Wilfrid is swept into the noble quest for the Kingdom of God thanks only to an ignoble misunderstanding involving the squire’s daughter. But this is Wilfrid’s time. From the English shores of the North Sea, through the war-torn continent to the remote heights of Helvetia, he becomes the heroic bearer of an ancient sceptre that will usher in Christ’s Kingdom on earth. France’s royal guard, smarting Roman papists, and contenders from all over the known world have other ideas, though. And the relic itself will not easily be tamed. A show-down in the mountain monastery reveals more mysteries than answers. Wilfrid’s epic quest carries a high cost, but it brings him back to Bamburgh a new man ready to make history.

Back to Bamburgh is Geoffrey Le Lancier’s first novel. Geoffrey was born and bred in England. He lives with his wife and children in the Helvetic Confederation (otherwise known as Switzerland). Learn more on www.le-lancier.com

The last slide shows a special moment coming full circle as it is a picture taken 15 years ago at my brother’s Robin Hood birthday party to which were invited all three of the author‘s children, including his eldest son in the brown tunic whom I used as the model for Will on the front cover. And there I am, yes, the tall one in the back. 😂

One of the things I love about this story is that it starts off in my birth country of England and takes you on a quest through the mountains of my current country of residence, Helvetia, commonly known as Switzerland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇭

I was excited about combining the two landscapes from the back cover to the front, depicting this transition the journey holds. 🌾🌊🏔️

THREE more days until the book‘s release! 📖 Title and cover will be revealed, so watch this space! 👀
Here is how I design a book cover in 5 steps! In Here is how I design a book cover in 5 steps!

In between each step I consult with the author to get feedback and direction on how I should proceed. The author tells me their ideas, and I provide visual concepts for them to find what they’re looking for in their cover. Once the reference is created, I can begin on the actual piece.

This project took about 80 hours from start to finish over a period of a number of months.

It’s been fun going from traditionally painting land and seascapes in oil on canvas to digitally oil painting on procreate — always with an aim to stay true to my naturalistic style.

As the HHB themed #NarniaNovember begins tomorrow, I am reminiscing on my first visit to Pakistan where my husband grew up. I felt very much like Aravis while I was there, and sometimes would be mistaken for a Pathan girl from the mountainous north. ⛰️🐐
